Scripture:

Prov. 25:28
Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls.

Comment:

The walls around the city were to protect it against attacking enemies. The scripture speaks of a city that lacked walls and was broken down. The enemy apparently had been given free access to the city. The result was, it had been destroyed.

The scripture compares the broken city with a man who can’t control his mind. Such a person has no protection for his soul, and the enemy can therefore cause him great harm. It is therefore important that we rule over, i.e. control, our emotions and thoughts.

How can we be in control of our mind? The answer is, we shouldn’t, but we should let Jesus control it through the Holy Spirit. It is up to us to give Him access to our soul.

Rev. 3:20
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

The Holy Spirit does not break into the soul. He knocks, and it is up to us to open up to Him. When the Holy Spirit gets access to an area of our soul, He creates order there, and gives us strong protection.

So what has this to do with spiritual warfare? The answer is that spiritual warfare is not just about attacking the evil spirits, but also about defending against their attacks. And since the soul is one of the main battlegrounds in the spiritual war, we will soon get into trouble unless we allow the Holy Spirit to have full control.
