The authority of the believer – part 2

The fall – not just Eve’s fault

It wasn’t only Eve who was deceived by the serpent, Adam was also deceived. He was actually present when it happened, and he also ate fruit from the forbidden tree.

Gen 3:6
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

They had been given the reign over all the animals and every living thing

Gen 1:27-28
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Adam and Eve had been given the reign over all of the animals, including the serpent. They had the authority, the serpent did not.

The fall – a consequence of Adam and Eve not using their authority

Both Adam and Eve were able to use their authority to command the serpent to go away. But as we all know, they didn’t, which in turn, had catastrophic consequences.

The focus of this story is usually on the fact that Eve was tempted to eat the fruit. But we need to realize that this was a case of double disobedience. Not only were Adam and Eve disobedient by eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge, but they were also disobedient by not using their authority.

The consequence, of Adam and Eve not using their authority, was that they lost it

Adam and Eve lost their authority because they did not use it. The devil took over the authority.
