Ps. 143:7
… lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.

Comment:

When we read, ”them that go down into the pit” we might think the scripture is talking about the dead. But the word ‘pit’, in the original text denotes a hole, especially in the meaning of a prison, a dungeon.

Who are they that go down into the pit? To answer, let’s have a look at the story about the man from the land of the Gadarenes, or ‘The man with a legion” which he is usually called. When Jesus took authority over the demons in the man, they asked Jesus not to send them into the deep.

Luke 8:31
And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.

Evidently, the demons were afraid of being sent into the deep, i.e. the pit. They were also aware that they could be sent there, or they wouldn’t have asked Jesus not to send them there.

In Revelation, chapter 9, we read about something that will take place in the last days. It says that the bottomless pit will be opened, and from there will come out a lot of locusts. Those locusts are generally interpreted as demons.

Rev. 9:1-3
1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

We said that the pit is a prison for evil spirits. In Rev. 9 we see them being let loose again for a short period, before they are thrown into the lake of fire.

You might say, ‘But Jesus didn’t cast evil spirits into the pit.’ You are right. The explanation is, casting evil spirits into the pit is the task for the church, not for Jesus.

David said he didn’t want to be like them that go down into the pit. That goes for us too. Let’s not be like the evil spirits who God has planned to put in jail.
