Spiritual Warfare in the Book of Psalms – 214

Ps 139:20 (Swedish version)
… they have brought your cities into disaster

your cities

What is a city? The question might seem unnecessary, but it is important.

A city can be defined in different ways, e.g. a lot of houses, shops, a place for pleasure etc. But, first and foremost a city is where a lot of people live, and God wants those people to be saved and restored.

your cities into disaster

This scripture says the cities have been destroyed. From our way of defining a city, i.e. a gathering of people, we understand that God’s plan for those people has been perverted. We can see the perversion by just reading the newspapers.

Every day someone is maltreated or stolen from. Marriages are ruined, children have a hard time, at home, and in school, people are destroyed because of alcohol and drugs. The list could go on and on. All this is contrary to God’s plan. Why is it like this?

they have brought your cities into disaster

Who are “they” who bring the cities into disaster? They are the enemies of God, i.e. the evil spiritual world. They are the thief who comes to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). While the authorities do the best they can to solve the problems in the cities, most of them are totally ignorant of spiritual warfare.

It is only the believers who can stop the real enemy. The people of God need to become aware of the spiritual war and about their position of authority.
