The enemy’s weapons: Anger – part 1

Filed under: Spiritual Warfare School — kellporten @ 14:58

What is anger?

The question may seem unwarranted. Anger is anger, right? But the fact of the matter is that there are different degrees of anger. It can range from slight irritation, to hatred. We can all probably agree that hatred is a very strong form of anger, but the question is whether we are willing to look at irritation as a form of anger?

Is it ok to show anger?

There are many opinions concerning anger. There are those who argue that we shouldn’t lock in our anger in order to feel good, and then there are those who argue that we shouldn’t let loose of our anger. Who is right? Both views are actually right. Let’s look at some scriptures dealing with anger.

Matt. 5:43-45
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven ….

Jesus tells us to even love our enemies. Can you love, and be angry at someone at the same time? Thus, Jesus indirectly says it is wrong to show anger towards our fellow beings.

Eph. 4:31
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.

Do you see what this scripture says? Paul writes about GETTING RID of ALL anger. If we get rid of all the anger, how much anger then is there left? None!!

Now let’s look at Eph 4:26. Many who claim it is ok to show anger refer to that scripture.

Eph. 4:26
“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,

It may seem as if Paul agrees to show anger, at least if you do not keep your anger for a long time. In a later part we’ll look at an alternative interpretation of the scripture.
