Spiritual Warfare in the Book of Psalms – part 131

Ps. 55:4
… the terrors of death are fallen upon me

It’s not unusual to have thoughts about death when the evil spiritual world is attacking. We can fear death, or we can long for it. Such thoughts come from the enemy, not from God.

Fear of death is, just like the quotation suggests, a form of fear. The Word of God tells us over and over again, not to fear. Fear is the opposite of trust. God wants us to trust in Him in every situation, but the evil spirits, who want to harm our relation with God, try to get us into fear.

Fear of death can attack us in many ways, from a feeling of uneasiness when we think about death, to a terrible agony in the dying process.

One way for the evil spirits to attack us, is to send thoughts of death against us. The purpose is to make us fear, and ultimately to passivate us. In the next verse of Psalm 55 we read:

Ps. 55:5
… horror hath overwhelmed me
(Swedish version: “… horror has paralyzed me)

Fear of death can paralyze us, but God has not meant it to be that way. He has meant us to candidly look forward to an eternal relation with Him, and to serve Him in this life without fear.

Luke 1:74-75
74 To grant unto us that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies Should serve him without fear,
75 In holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

We are called to rid the evil out of our way, instead of allowing them to attack us with fear of death.

Rev. 12:11
And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb, and because of the word of their testimony; and they loved not their life even unto death.

Thoughts of death can be more than the fear of dying; the thoughts may be, wanting to die. Wanting to die is more a ‘fear of living’, rather than a fear of death. We need to be aware that the spirits of death have a special task to make us end our life in advance, regardless of how it happens. It might happen through suicide or from getting into dangerous situations, like driving like a madman. It would be ‘interesting’ to know how many died a premature death due to evil spirits wanting them to leave their calling here on earth.
