Does the bible mention angels?

The bible mentions angels in 59 of its 66 books. Angels are mentioned in more than 260 scriptures.

Where does the word ’angel’ come from?

Our word ’angel’ comes from the Greek word ‘angelos’ which means messenger.

How is the word ’angelos’ interpreted in the bible?

The word has been interpreted in different ways according to its context.

• Messengers (humans with a message) – Luke 7:24
• ”Angel of God” (human with a message from God) – Gal 4:14
• ”Angel of the church” (leader of the church) – Rev. 2:1
• The angels of God – Gen. 32:1
• The angels of the devil – Matt. 25:41
• The angel of the Lord – Exo. 3:2

What is the difference between the angels of God, and the angels of the devil?

The first and foremost difference is, the angels of God are God’s messengers, sent by God, while the angels of the devil are messengers of the devil.

What are the angels like?

The angels are spiritual beings, created by God.

What are the angels not like?

• The angels are not little chubby childlike beings with wings. People have portrayed them like that, but is not biblical.
• The angels are not deceased people.

Do children become angels when they die?

No, angels are spiritual beings, specially created by God.

Do children have guardian angels?

Yes, they do.

Matt. 18:10
“Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven.

When did God create the angels?

The angels were probably created before earth existed.

Job 38:4-7
4 “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding.
5 Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?
6 To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone,
7 When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Many believe that ”the morning stars” and “the sons of God” refer to angels.

How many angels are there?

Let’s state that there are a tremendously amount of angels.

Rev. 5:11
Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands,

If we take this scripture literally, we can make the following mathematical calculation:
10 000 x 10 000 + 1 000 x 1 000 = 101 000 000

One third of the angels deserted and were cast out of heaven, so the angels spoken of in Rev. 5:11 are the two thirds who remained.

However, don’t take our calculation too seriously. There are probably more angels than we can count.

Do the angels have names?

The bible mentions the names of several angels.

• Michael – who has the title of an archangel in Jud v 9.
• Gabriel – Dan. 8:16, 9:21; Luke 1:19, 26
• Lucifer, son of the morning (the name of the angel who later got the name Satan) – Isa. 14:12
