Scripture:

Prov. 26:4
Do not answer a fool according to his folly, Lest you also be like him.

Comment:

When we encounter people who speak and act foolishly, we should not respond to them in the wrong way. If we respond to them, e.g. by getting annoyed at their mistakes, we are behaving just as foolish as they are. The same applies if we, out of pride, disregard them. God wants us to love all people, even the most foolish.

Mark 12:29-31
29 Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘HEAR, O ISRAEL, THE LORD OUR GOD, THE LORD IS ONE.
30 AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.’ This is the first commandment.
31 And the second, like it, is this: ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

The fact that we are supposed to love people with the love of God doesn’t mean we should accept everything. The love of God rejoices in the truth.

1 Cor. 13:6
does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;

Now, let’s have a look at Prov 26:5.

Prov. 26:5
Answer a fool according to his folly, Lest he be wise in his own eyes.

How do we “answer a fool” in the right way? The answer is that we, in a loving way, are to help him see the truth. We also need to fight against the evil spirits who seduced him to think and act foolishly.
