Prov. 23:20 (ESV)
Be not among drunkards …

When it says that we should not be among drunkards it doesn’t mean that we should ignore them. We should not follow their way of living, but we need to help them out of the addiction, into freedom.

So what does alcohol addiction have to do with spiritual warfare? The answer is, there may be a demonic reason for this type of problem.

Alcohol leads to dependency, but we need to understand that the problem is bigger than that. To explain, let’s tell the story about Joe.

Joe was an alcoholic when he got saved. Despite the fact that Jesus came into his life, he did not want to stop drinking. But once, when he was attending a meeting, the preacher took authority over spirits of alcohol addiction, and Joe was set free. When Joe came to that meeting, he had the attitude that he didn’t want to stop drinking, but when he left the meeting he did not want to have anything to do with alcohol. From that meeting and on, he hasn’t wanted to drink even a single drop of alcohol. His attitude changed.

What happened to Joe? He was under the influence of demons of alcohol addiction, and when he was set free from them, his own will got free. As a new creation he did not really want alcohol, but the demons ruled his will until they were forced to leave.
