Prov. 18:12
Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, And before honor is humility.

Pride can manifest in different ways, and we shall have a look at two of them now.

The first thing we probably think of concerning pride is, having a high opinion of ourselves. That was the devil’s original sin. He thought he could take a position above God. The consequence was, the devil was cast out of heaven.

Another variant of pride seems to be the opposite of pride. It is when we as believers stubbornly believe and cling to that man is an insignificant worm before God. Certainly it is true that we are nothing in ourselves, but as believers, we have a new identity. When we have the Holy Spirit dwelling within ourselves, it is totally wrong to look down on ourselves. To assert that we as believers can do nothing, and that we are worthless, is pride. It’s pride because we claim to know more about our worth and our ability, than God does.

Phil. 4:13
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Eph. 3:20
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,

In order for us to serve God fully, not least in spiritual warfare, we need to humble ourselves under the Word of God, and we need to act from God’s power and ability in us. If we, because of pride, continue to believe that we can do nothing, we allow the evil spirits to continue to attack us, which can ultimately lead to our fall.
