Who are our enemies?

People are not our enemies, even though they can act like they are

Eph. 6:12
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood …

The devil and his demons are our enemies

For we do … wrestle against … principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

The more we realize, and the quicker we recognize, that our real enemy is not the person we see, but the evil spiritual world which we don’t see, the quicker and better we will be able to deal with our problems, e.g. relational problems.

What does contest mean?

Competition and rivalry are two synonyms for contest. It is in that sense we look at the spirit of contest.

What does a spirit of contest do?

A spirit of contest makes us compete and become rivals, and it can use jealousy, and the need to be best, to build walls of tension in relationships.

What use does the Jezebel spirit have for spirits of contest?

Anything that creates distance between people, and everything that makes us try to outshine each other, will be of great use to the Jezebel spirit.

Our enemies, or God’s?

God has ordained strength to His children, because of His enemies. Who then, are His enemies? The devil and his evil spirits are definitively His enemies, and they hate Him. But, why do they attack us? In order to understand why, we need to realize who we are.

We read in Gen. 1:26-27 that God made us in His image. We are His creation, and He loves us. When the devil and one third of the angels rebelled against God, they were cast out of God’s heaven. They didn’t have a chance against God, nor will they ever have. Since the devil cannot hurt God directly, he attacks God’s creation instead. He attacks God’s beloved people, in order to hurt Him that way.

Another reason why we are being attacked by the evil spiritual world is, we are a threat against them. The truth is, they are afraid of us! God has delegated authority to us, in order for us to execute His will on earth. The evil spirits know that if they don’t succeed in stopping us, God will use us to confine them. To the evil spirits, it’s a matter of freedom or captivity.

When a believer understands his position of authority, he, of course becomes a bigger threat against the evil spiritual world. A believer who is ignorant of God’s Word, or chooses not to obey or do what God wants, is not much of a challenge. And, the bigger threat we are, the more attacks we get. This truth alone might be scary, but the complete truth is, God protects those, who do His will. We are in a far more dangerous position if we choose to disobey God, than if we choose to obey God, and get into a bigger battle.

In order to be used by God in spiritual warfare we need to:

• be saved
• have a mouth
• realize there is an enemy
• use our mouth to speak commands against the enemy
• believe that God puts His power on our commands

The evil spiritual world does anything it can to make us believe that spiritual warfare is complicated, and that it is only for a few experts. The Word of God says, casting out demons is a sign that follows everyone, who believes.

Mark 16:17
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils …

Regardless of what God has called us to do, and regardless of what vision the local church has, it is absolutely necessary to be active in spiritual warfare. It is a condition for to serve in our personal calling, and essential, for the church to go forth in its vision.

What does a spirit of doubt do?

A spirit of doubt tries to get us to doubt, God, ourselves and everything else.

Why does the evil spirit world want to make us doubt?

The evil spirits want us to doubt in order to weaken our faith, so we will not be effective in our service to God. Doubt is very advantageous for the evil spirit world.

Should we ever doubt?

A man of God once said: “If you have to doubt, doubt your doubts!” We will be hit by doubts, but we need to understand that it is not the Holy Spirit who comes with such things. He has come to lead us into the whole truth. If there is anything that He wants to change in our lives, He will show us how it should be. He doesn’t leave us with a question mark, like the enemy does.

What use does the Jezebel spirit have for spirits of doubt?

Because doubts weaken our service for God, it is useful for the Jezebel spirit, and for every other evil spirit too.

How does God use the mouth of His children?

The scripture says that God has ”ordained strength” out of their mouth. The original text for ‘ordain’ can also mean ‘make a foundation’.

When we speak, God will make our words a foundation for His strength, i.e. He puts His power on our words. It is extremely important for us to understand this truth.

We are tempted to discern from our emotions, whether we have enough strength or not.

• We may feel, or think, that we have strength, i.e. our own strength, and act from it. But, our own strength will not be sufficient.
• Or we may feel that we don’t have strength, and therefore we feel, or think, we cannot act.

The truth is, we are not called to act from our own strength.

• We are called to speak commands
• It is God’s job, to put His power on our words

When we do our job, we should believe that God will do His job.

When we speak commands against the evil spirits, not just our words reach them, but God’s power. The power of God, put on our words, hit the evil spirits, and they have no chance against it.

We haven chosen to save Ps. 8 until the end of this series. Ps. 8:2 is a very important scripture when it comes to spiritual warfare.

Who does God use as His tool in spiritual warfare?

He uses His children. The condition for you to be used by God in spiritual warfare is, to be His child, i.e. to be born again.

The scripture is talking about babes and sucklings. In other words you don’t have to be a world evangelist to be used in spiritual warfare. You can be used even as a new born believer.

How does God use His children in spiritual warfare?

God uses our mouth, i.e. what we speak. We cannot wish, weep or sleep away the demons! But, we can speak, in faith, and they have to leave.

The original word for ’mouth’ in Ps. 8:2, can also be translated ‘command’. It is our commands that still the enemy, the evil spirits, not our prayers to God for Him to intervene. The enemy is very much aware of this fact, and therefore he will try to stop us from receiving any teaching about our authority and about our mission to still the enemy.

What is the difference between spirits of controversy and spirits of schism?

A controversy can mean conflict and schism, but it can also be a judicial process, and it is the latter we will focus on here.

What does the bible say about judicial processes?

The bible says that judicial processes between believers should be avoided.

1 Cor. 6:7
Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?

What does a spirit of controversy do?

A spirit of controversy tries to make its victims to take people to court. For example; There was a town where God’s people were close to spiritual break through. Several churches had their meetings together, and there was revival in the air. Then some members took their church to court because of a problem with their meetinghouse. That changed the spiritual situation in that town, and the revival came to a halt.

What use does the Jezebel spirit have for spirits of controversy?

The example we just gave, speaks for itself. A law suit doesn’t please God, and it hinders the anointing. That is definitely in line with the intentions of the Jezebel spirit.
